Löwe

Einmal hielt sich der Buddha bei Sāvatthī in Jetas Wäldchen auf, dem Kloster des Anāthapiṇḍika. Da saß der Buddha gerade inmitten einer großen Versammlung und lehrte den Dhamma.

Da dachte Māra: „Der Asket Gotama sitzt inmitten einer großen Versammlung und lehrt den Dhamma. Warum gehe ich nicht hin und führe sie hinters Licht?“

Und Māra der Böse ging zum Buddha und redete ihn mit einer Strophe an:

„Warum brüllst du da wie ein Löwe? Du bist so selbstbewusst in der Versammlung! Da ist jemand, der mit dir ringen will, warum also hältst du dich für den Sieger?“

„Die großen Helden, sie brüllen selbstbewusst in den Versammlungen. Der Klargewordene, der die Macht erlangt hat, ist über das Klammern an der Welt hinausgegangen.“

Da dachte Māra der Böse: „Der Buddha kennt mich! Der Heilige kennt mich!“ Elend und traurig verschwand er eben dort.

Lion

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Now, at that time the Buddha was teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly.

Then Māra thought, “The ascetic Gotama is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly. Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?”

Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

“Why now do you roar like a lion? You’re so self-assured in the assembly! For there is someone who’ll wrestle with you, so why do you imagine you’re the victor?”

“The great heroes they roar, self-assured in the assemblies. The Realized One, attained to power, has crossed over clinging to the world.”

Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.

Kinnusīhasutta

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā mahatiyā parisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti.

Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi: “ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo mahatiyā parisāya parivuto dhammaṁ deseti. Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.

Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

“Kinnu sīhova nadasi, parisāyaṁ visārado; Paṭimallo hi te atthi, vijitāvī nu maññasī”ti.

“Nadanti ve mahāvīrā, parisāsu visāradā; Tathāgatā balappattā, tiṇṇā loke visattikan”ti.

Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
