4. Das Kapitel über die Schar der Hundert Schmeicheleien

Mit Pajjunnas Tochter (1)

So habe ich es gehört: Einmal hielt sich der Buddha bei Vesālī am Großen Wald auf, in der Halle mit dem Giebeldach.

Da kam spät in der Nacht die strahlende Kokanadā, Pajjunnas Tochter, die mit ihrer Schönheit den Großen Wald weithin erhellte, zum Buddha, verbeugte sich, stellte sich zur Seite hin und sagte in Gegenwart des Buddha diese Strophen auf:

„In den Wäldern von Vesālī weilt der Buddha, der Beste der Schöpfung. Kokanadā bin ich, die ihn verehrt, Kokanadā, Pajjunnas Tochter.

Zuvor hatte ich die Lehre, die der Klaräugige verwirklicht hat, nur gehört. Aber jetzt kenne ich sie als Zeugin, während der Abgeklärte, der Heilige, lehrt.

Es gibt Dummköpfe, die herumgehen und die Lehre der Edlen anprangern. Sie stürzen in die schreckliche Hölle der Schreie, wo sie lange Zeit leiden.

Es gibt die, die in der Lehre der Edlen zu Zustimmung und Frieden gekommen sind. Wenn sie diesen menschlichen Körper aufgegeben haben, werden sie die Scharen der Götter mehren.“

With Pajjunna’s Daughter (1st)

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Then, late at night, the glorious Kokanadā, Pajjunna’s daughter, lighting up the entire Great Wood, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:

“Staying in the woods of Vesālī is the Buddha, best of creation. Kokanadā am I who worships him, Kokanadā, Pajjuna’s daughter.

Previously I had only heard the teaching realized by the Clear-eyed One. But now I know it as a witness while the sage, the Holy One teaches.

There are simpletons who go about denouncing the teaching of the noble ones. They fall into the terrible Hell of Screams where they suffer long.

There are those who have found <j>acceptance and peace in the teaching of the noble ones. After giving up this human body, they swell the hosts of gods.”

Paṭhamapajjunnadhītusutta

Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

Atha kho kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ mahāvanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

“Vesāliyaṁ vane viharantaṁ, Aggaṁ sattassa sambuddhaṁ; Kokanadāhamasmi abhivande, Kokanadā pajjunnassa dhītā.

Sutameva pure āsi, Dhammo cakkhumatānubuddho; Sāhaṁ dāni sakkhi jānāmi, Munino desayato sugatassa.

Ye keci ariyaṁ dhammaṁ, Vigarahantā caranti dummedhā; Upenti roruvaṁ ghoraṁ, Cirarattaṁ dukkhaṁ anubhavanti.

Ye ca kho ariye dhamme, Khantiyā upasamena upetā; Pahāya mānusaṁ dehaṁ, Devakāyaṁ paripūressantī”ti.
